• Boulder County GOP Chair is running to unseat  this fall.

WASHINGTON — Boulder County GOP Chair George Leing said Thursday he will run against Rep. Jared Polis later this year to represent the 2nd Congressional District.

In his announcement e-mail, Leing, a lawyer, capitalized on one of Rep. Jared Polis’ top issues in his effort to defeat him: energy development.

“I have seen first hand how increased regulations and more taxation harms business and adversely impacts working Colorado families,” he said, in a statement. “I believe we are in the best position to make our own decisions without government interference.”

Polis, a second-term Democrat, is front and center in the anti-fracking movement. He has both constituents and personal interests at stake: He represents three municipalities, Boulder, Lafayette and Fort Collins, whose voters last year approved fracking moratoriums.

Polis has also battled an energy company that set up a frack well near his personal property near Berthoud.

Leing said Polis is out of touch with his constituents and noted there is an “urgent need” for new leaders and better thinkers in Washington.

The son of Chinese immigrants, Leing is a graduate of New York University and holds a law degree from Yale.

Reached Tuesday afternoon, Polis hadn’t heard about Leing’s announcement.

“There’s a lot of work to do before the election season begins again,” he said.
