A Coloradan who registered voters for the 2012 election and now faces a misdemeanor charge in connection with a voter-fraud investigation said he did nothing wrong.

Michael Michaelis, 41, is one of four people the Arapahoe County district attorney charged last week after an investigation into voter ineligibility. Two were canvassers who registered people for a liberal organization, and two were immigrants ineligible to vote. All four face misdemeanor charges of “procuring a false registration.”

Michaelis is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 6.

“This is just a big political game,” Michaelis, who is unaffiliated, said Tuesday. “They’re pushing charges on the wrong guy.”

He said a district attorney investigator questioned him about one registration form out “of hundreds” he handled, a case where a woman truthfully checked a box that she was a noncitizen.

“I didn’t do anything wrong. I told her she couldn’t vote if she wasn’t a citizen. Case closed,” Michaelis said.

“All of the facts in our case will be presented at trial,” responded Lisa Pinto, spokeswoman for District Attorney George Brauchler.

Brauchler launched the investigation in July after Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler referred 155 cases of noncitizen voters to local district attorneys for investigation. Forty-one of those cases were in Brauchler’s jurisdiction.

Michaelis was employed by Work for Progress, a national nonprofit that registers voters and has an office in Lower Downtown Denver. The other canvasser who was charged was Carl Blocker, 51, who was employed by one of Work for Progress’ subcontractors, Grass Roots Voter Outreach.

Blocker and Work for Progress were not available for comment.
