• In an extraordinary development this evening, it has been discovered that Amy Speers, candidate for the Adams 12 Five Star Schools District 4 seat, is not eligible to run for that office.

Speers’ address as recorded with Adams County property recordsand as shown on her campaign finance records with the Colorado Secretary of State show an address on 114th Ave east of Holly.

The latest Director District map shows that address is in District 2.  District 4, the office for which she has filed to run and is on the ballot for, has a northern most boundary of 112th Avenue.

It would appear Speers has made a fatal miscalculation by running for an office she is not even eligible for.

What this means exactly for the ballot and voters is not clear.

Certainly one would assume that any votes cast for Speers would be simply discarded.  This would result in Rico Figueroa, her opponent in the race, winning by default.

I would hope that Speers would owe up to her mistake and simply gracefully withdraw.

All of this also begs the question as to how Speers made it on the ballot in the first place.

She had to file an affidavit saying she was eligible and on August 29  Adams 12 issued a Statement of Sufficiency.  This stated that, “Frances Mullins, Designated Election Official, has reviewed the petitions and deemed…Ms. Speers’ petition sufficient with 76 valid entries.”

It seems hard to believe the district checks the signatures on the petition but doesn’t verify a candidate’s address.

As I understand it, the Denver Post and 9News are working on this story as well.  I have emailed Speers for comment but have not received a reply.
