Choosing to represent your fellow citizens is worthwhile. However it takes more than a phone and a tie. Experience that only comes with age is a requirement. Thornton voters should vote no on 2D.Choosing to represent your fellow citizens is worthwhile. However it takes more than a phone and a tie. Experience that only comes with age is a requirement. Thornton voters should vote no on 2D.

At the current time Thornton’s residents must be 25 years old to run for municipal office.  This measure would reduce that age requirement to 21.

On the surface this might sound okay.  However a closer look shows this measure is in place to satisfy one noisy resident who has long been a thorn in the city’s backside.

Thornton is the sixth largest city in the state of Colorado and providing proper governance requires knowledge, much of which can only be gained by life experience.  Few 21-year-olds have this and the city charter certainly does not need to be amended to accommodate the one resident who now thinks he has the experience to handle it.

It should also be noted that the resident pushing this issue, Seth Thomas, is the grandson of current Thornton City Councilperson Jenice ‘JJ’ Dove.  Seems we may have to start another branch on the Adams Family tree, eh?   Lord knows the last thing we need is more familial ties in Adams County politics.

Those pushing this issue have put forth the argument that if someone can serve in the military at 18, they should be allowed to serve on council.  That seems like a compelling argument but I entirely dismiss it. Comparing a wannabe politician to the brave men and women that volunteer to risk their lives and wear our nation’s uniforms is insulting.

Do you want experience?  Want to show maturity?  Stand up and put on that uniform.  Until then, don’t dare to compare yourself to them.

    Vote no on 2D.

Six municipal issues will be on City of Thornton voters’ ballots in 2013.  Some are relatively benign, some appear to be but are certainly not.  This week I will be running down each one individually offering my thoughts on them.  Be sure to check back daily for a look at these issues and the reasoning why I think you should or shouldn’t vote in favor of them.
