WASHINGTON — Colorado’s Michael Bennet and Cory Gardner were split as the U.S. Senate rejected the idea of summoning witnesses for President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial late Friday, all but ensuring his acquittal. But senators considered pushing off final voting on his fate to next week.
The vote on allowing new witnesses was defeated 51-49 on a near party-line vote.
Bennet, a Democrat, voted in favor of allowing new witnesses. Gardner, a Republican, voted in opposition.
“We have heard countless hours of testimony from the House counsel and defense counsel,” Gardner told The Colorado Sun in an exclusive interview on Wednesday. “We’ve heard from 17 impeachment witnesses through the record of the House, as well as presentations on the Senate floor. We’ve had over 100 hours of impeachment witness testimony. I don’t think we need an 18th witness.”
